John Bartlett

Chair Designate
John has had a highly successful career, beginning at the Inland Revenue and later transitioning to BP, where he rose to the position of Group Financial Controller. His childhood and formative years deeply influenced his choice of non-profit, non-executive appointments. While still at BP, John was approached to chair Barnardo’s, the largest children’s charity in the UK.
During his tenure at Barnardo’s, the charity made an innovative investment in property to create a program for care leavers, providing homes where they could live independently with the support of a worker nearby.
Currently, John serves as a Board Member for an HSBC business in the Middle East and is also a Trustee and Chair of the Finance, Risk, and Audit Committee at the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
As a Chair, John described himself as not a grandstander but one who positively drives action through consensus and likes collective decision making. He invests the time to really understand the charity’s work, visiting the sites and understanding the perspectives of beneficiaries.
He brings extensive stakeholder experience including government built on the annual parliamentary gatherings he ran with his CEO in Westminster and has broad based ministerial and governmental connections. Equally he has engaged with broader stakeholders and the previous sector and civil society on behalf of Barnardo’s.
