Volunteer for us

Whether it’s a marathon, a sky-dive, a tea party or a community clear-up, we welcome volunteers to help us improve the lives of veterans.

If you have an idea, please contact our friendly team at [email protected]

Here’s just a few of the activities and events willing volunteers have participated in or kindly sponsored. We have over 50 communities across the UK, so there are lots of opportunities where you can help.

Garden tidy-up

This summer, Haig staff and volunteers from two insurance companies rolled up their sleeves and got to work in the grounds of the Morden community .

The day was spent rebuilding garden beds, planting flowers and trimming hedges to revitalise the gardens, adding a fresh touch whilst taking care of general maintenance to keep the greenery around the properties in top shape.

Royal Parks Half Marathon

Marathon and Half Marathon events always attract those in search of a personal challenge and it’s a popular way to raise much needed charitable funds. Get your trainers at the ready and check out our London Marathon and Royal Parks Half Marathon pages

Ride to the Gate

A group of Haig supporters set up a Ride to the Gate challenge in 2023 cycling over 300 miles over 3 days to raise funds for Haig Housing. The event started at The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and the team of cyclists and support vehicle finished at The Menin Gate where they laid a wreath on behalf of Haig Housing and Hidden Warriors CIC.

Community clear-up

A community clear-up day at the start of the school holidays was welcomed by the residents of Haig’s Morden estate. A hard-working team from a contractor provided a skip lorry and cleared bin stores and removed unwanted items from resident’s homes and gardens. The garden maintenance team smartened up the grounds, trimming hedges and weeding flower beds.

Garden competitions

Many of Haig Housings communities were built with gardens and green communal spaces, it’s one of the many advantages of our homes for veterans. As we are spread across the UK, we often hold garden competitions for our residents and publish the results in Haig News, our bi-annual magazine for residents. The sense of pride of our veterans in the gardens is clear.

Golf days

Haig Housing’s Golf Days are always popular for Haig staff, suppliers and residents to get together to network and socialise and raise valuable funds to support veterans. These have been sponsored by generous suppliers and other organisations providing raffle prizes and sponsoring holes and tables for the prize-winners dinner.

Ride London

We are grateful to all cyclists who participate in cycling events to raise money for Haig Housing. RideLondon is an epic 100-mile fundraising event and Haig Housing draws from a network of residents, family, friends, staff and suppliers for participants.

Creating a community garden

Haig Housing’s Community Fund is for small resident-led projects to make improvements for their communities. The fund can be used for anything from improving a shared outdoor space to setting up a community activity, like a drop in group or a weekly coffee morning.

Haig’s Haslemere community got together to create a community garden with an extended patio, new flower beds and a shed for storing garden tools and furniture.

“It was hard work, but worth it.” Andy, Haslemere

Platinum Jubilee celebrations

Haig communities across the UK celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of Haig Housing’s Patron Her Majesty the Queen in 2022.

It was a chance for everyone at Haig Housing – residents, families and friends along with staff and supporters – to get together and hold a celebration. To help with this Haig sent a £20 supermarket voucher to each household to help them with their parties and other celebrations.

The supermarket vouchers were kindly sponsored by Morrisons.

VE Day - 75th Anniversary

Even lockdown doesn’t stop Haig communities getting together. In 2020, we all had to do things differently and the residents of Haig Close, Isle of Wight demonstrated this with a socially-distanced party to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

The Long Walk Home

The Trust organised “The Long Walk Home” in 2018. This 100-mile pilgrimage walk by Veterans, serving personnel and reservists, from the Menin Gate in Ypres to the Cenotaph in Whitehall, commemorated the Centenary of the ending of the Great War. The Walk culminated with the Nation’s annual Service of Remembrance on Armistice Day, Sunday 11th November.

Tower of London poppy installation

Haig Housing was also one of the Service charities involved with the Tower of London ceramic poppy installation, “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” that marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the First World War. Created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies were used in the installation.
